Keeping performance levels up in Mushroom Casing Soil

September 9, 2025

What began as a bold initiative to reduce reliance on black peat in mushroom casing soil has evolved into a cross-functional journey of innovation, resilience, and sustainability at Kekkilä-BVB.

In 2023, we proudly launched BVB Green Plus, a pioneering casing soil blend that replaces 30% of black peat with renewable biomass—without compromising on yield or quality.

“For Kekkilä-BVB, sustainable performing casing soil means mushroom yield (kg/m²), picking efficiency, quality mushrooms, and financial return—in other words, sustainability per kilogram produced,” explains Hans Nendels, Senior Business Specialist Mushroom at Kekkilä-BVB.

We are currently in the testing phase and we are now pleased to share the first results of 50% replacement, achieved through cultivation trials at Banken Champignons BV. The performance remains consistent, confirming that we are on the right path.

“This journey has been about more than just materials,” says Roxanne van Rooijen, Senior Researcher at Kekkilä-BVB. “It’s about rethinking the entire value chain—from sourcing and processing to customer acceptance and market readiness.”

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed with insights, creativity, and perseverance. Together, we are shaping a more sustainable future for horticulture.
