Kekkilä-BVB continues to invest in circular raw materials with new wood fibre production in the Netherlands

June 2, 2026

Kekkilä-BVB has launched a new wood fibre production line in Grubbenvorst, the Netherlands. With this investment, we take the next step in scaling up the use of circular raw materials such as wood fibre, reed canary grass and accretio in high-performance substrate blends.

Circular raw materials are used across several Kekkilä-BVB brands, serving both professional and consumer markets. In BVB Substrates, they are applied in substrate blends tailored to different crops and growing conditions.

“Global demand for growing media is expected to triple by 2050. Because peat alone cannot meet this need, we are developing new circular materials for our smart substrate blends. Only a few raw materials meet growers’ high performance requirements, and wood fibre is one of them. By investing in wood fibre production near our sites in Northern and Central Europe, we strengthen our ability to serve customers in the future,” says Pekka Tennilä, CEO of Kekkilä-BVB.

Production and certification of Wood fibre

The Grubbenvorst facility processes PEFC-certified residual wood from the Central European timber industry, with an annual capacity of up to 400,000 m³. Production is RHP-certified, guaranteeing consistent quality, hygiene, and product safety. The process is flexible: fibres can be tailored from fine to coarse, depending on the application and crop type.

What wood fibre brings to substrate blends

In substrate blends, including those under BVB Substrates, wood fibre contributes three key properties:

  • high porosity
  • improved drainage
  • structural stability

This makes it suitable for a wide range of crops, from young plants to larger pot sizes.

More supply certainty for growers

By producing in-house wood fibre, we reduce dependency on external raw material supply chains and give growers greater confidence in long-term substrate availability. This investment also represents a concrete step toward our ambition of achieving 50% circular raw materials in our substrate blends by 2030 without compromising on performance.
