Grower Story: SV.CO
BVB Substrates developed a substrate mix for SV.CO based on reed canary grass. In this grower story, SV.CO shares how this mix is applied and experienced in daily practice within the cultivation of flowering plants. SV.CO also reflects on the positive properties of the mix.
Reed canary grass: more air and better drainage
SV.CO grows 23 cm kalanchoë in a greenhouse with naturally humid and wet conditions. This places specific demands on the substrate: sufficient air in the pot and a well‑controllable response to irrigation are essential.

For this reason, small‑scale practical trials were carried out. Based on measurement results and plant responses, the reed canary grass substrate blend was adjusted and further developed step by step. This resulted in a substrate solution that SV.CO now uses in its daily cultivation practice.
Performance and sustainability hand in hand
With reed canary grass, BVB Substrates demonstrates how renewable raw materials can contribute to proven growing results. By continuously testing in practice and working closely with growers, substrate solutions are developed that are not only more sustainable, but also perform fit for purpose within specific growing conditions.
