From laboratory to substrate: reed canary grass proves its value

June 8, 2026

Circular raw materials at Kekkilä‑BVB undergo an extensive research process before being applied in BVB substrate mixtures. In the laboratories in De Lier and Venlo, materials are analysed and tested for their chemical, physical and phytosanitary properties.

These are followed by greenhouse trials under professional growing conditions, so that you, as a grower, can be confident that what works in the laboratory also works in your crop.

Reed canary grass is one of the circular raw materials that has successfully completed this process. Watch the video in which Lisa Zamparo from Research & Development explains the benefits of reed canary grass in substrate mixtures.

More control over water management

Reed canary grass can increase the air content in the substrate mixture, supporting root development and crop growth. At the same time, it contributes to improved drainage.

In addition, the top layer of the pot remains drier, as the material is slightly less capillary. Depending on the irrigation system used, this can help to prevent problems related to an overly wet surface.

Grower stories and practical experience

The application of reed canary grass is now also being tested in practice by growers in, among others, the Netherlands and Finland.

Experience has also been gained within the Netherlands through BVB Substrates, for example at SV.CO. Read the ▶ SV.CO grower story.
